Science First

Monsanto recently drafted a pledge of Five Commitments: Respect, Transparency, Dialogue, Sharing, and Benefits. These are qualities that all multinational organizations should bring to the debate over GM crops. In the meantime, the technology of genetic engineering has already emerged and bears promising potential. On the question of world hunger, GM crops are not the full solution, but they can play a part in one. There are possible risks which must be examined and compared to the risks associated with current agricultural conditions, and progress must not be sought too hastily. It is important to base considerations of the benefits and risks of GM crops on careful scientific research, rather than corporate interest or public fears.
