Barany does fail to cover, except in passing, the views of current NATO states on the admission of any of his case study candidates, suggesting a further area of inquiry. Though Barany’s analyses move quickly, they are indispensable to those interested in understanding the modern development of NATO and the European Union, as well as Central and Eastern Europe. Well-documented and coherently laid out, these case studies present data and insights to which few have had access until now. The future of Europe’s integration, and the security of what may soon be the world’s largest economic entity, cannot be fully understood without Barany’s pioneering work.
