Do you feel patriotism comes into play in how stories are reported? Is there such a thing as “unpatriotic” reporting?
What happened on September 11 would be the prime example of that; it was such a galvanizing event for the United States, obviously something that the country had never seen before, and reporters are not immune to any of the sentiments that anyone else would feel when their country is under attack. There is a sense that the reporting reflected that human tragedy and that sensibility, but at the same time, I think that there was a lot of reporting done about some of the motivations that fueled the hatred toward the West. I suppose some might consider that unpatriotic, but that reporting was certainly out there and has been since September 11. Also, there has been more critical reporting conducted with the benefit of time about things like the World Trade Center’s structural flaws or whether all the rescue workers acted heroically. Those stories took time to come out, but they are being told, and I think rightly so.
